Awaken

learning. exploring. volunteering.

I created Awaken as a means to merge all of my passions in life: volunteering, exploring new places, feeling freedom, and trying new things. I was born into a low-income family, and at the age of seven, I had to sell candies on the streets to help my family survive. With the help of positive influences in my life, I worked hard and was ultimately accepted to university, thus providing a means to get out of that neighborhood.

I was born into a low-income family, and at the age of seven, I had to sell candies on the streets to help my family survive. With the help of positive influences in my life, I worked hard and was ultimately accepted to university, thus providing a means to get out of that neighborhood. I went on to have a lucrative career as a pilot, yet I always felt that something was missing.  Thus, I left my life as a pilot in 2015 and opened a youth foundation in that very neighborhood that I grew up in.

I look back on all my life experiences, and I realize that even the hardest moments led me to this moment and led me to my purpose. I wanted to share these lessons with others, especially those who once saw their dreams, but now only see despair. I have worked as a psychologist, instructor, educator, consultant. My experiences and passion for working with people makes me enthusiastic about strengthening and empowering people's lives by using strategic knowledge and developing experiences that create a permanent shift in their lifestyle.

We are Awaken

Awaken started as an at-risk youth foundation and has grown into so much more. Now, we support our youth at the foundation, lead immersive travel programs around Ecuador, and offer professional skills development workshops.

The Team

Our mission is to work with youth of parents who are currently or were formerly in juvenile detention, as well as the parents themselves in order to effectively reinsert each member of the family into society and become productive citizens.

Our mission is to work with youth of parents who are currently or were formerly in juvenile detention, as well as the parents themselves in order to effectively reinsert each member of the family into society and become productive citizens. We support each participant’s physical, psychological, behavioral, educational, and professional development while cultivating a better quality of life. Finally, we work with society at large to raise awareness about a culture of compassion and social support.

Our Policy

Awaken is committed to sustainable travel. This refers to everything from "leave no trace" rules to the guides we contract and locations we visit. Awaken is 100% paper free, all marketing and internal documents are online or in a digital format and we encourage all our employees/interns to use public transportation. All lodging and meals provided on trips are contracted with local communities, in order to help sustain them and grow their economy through tourism. In every region we visit in Ecuador, we support local community projects such as San Clemente in Ibarra City, Rio Muchacho on the Ecuadorian coast, and Sinchi Warmi in the Amazon jungle.
